Umm, It's Pretty Personal

I'm embarrassingly late on a heap of Christmas thank yous and general correspondence. To get in the mood for putting pen to paper, I thought I'd create a new design for some Crane's stationery I thrifted a while back ($1.50!).

The color of the paper is beautful and so difficult to capture here. It's a warm, stoney grey with a soft texture...

For my name I used Bernard font and for the address, Lacuna. The little butterfly totem is from an animal wingding series. It's super to easy to personalize your paper, and makes the writing so much more fun!

It's an annual tradition to handcraft Christmas presents each year for friends, family and neighbors and this year was no exception. The boys voted hands down to cook instead of craft, so I jumped at the chance to employ my newly purchased red baker's twine for the packaging.

Not only did I get to use my new twine, and my favorite jelly jars, I also experimented with some recently acquired fonts. I used Blackout in Midnight for the "Good Morning Granola" and combined it with Bernard for the "handcrafted by beck & max" portion. For the recipe and other project bits skip over to SeeSarahSpin.

I am super happy for my mom, she is starting her own business called Mother Magpie's--it's a funky mix of her vintage treasures and DIY handiwork. I got the fabulous job of designing her logo, business cards and signage. We did a large rubber stamp that she can use on manila shipping tags, and the next item up for design is a banner.

Outtakes from The Moustache Bash (for Kids)

As promised I'm sharing some crafty bits for the TFD blog, based on the Moustache Bash bday party we had for Master B and Master M. Fun, easy, kid based projects...POTATO PRINTS!

I drew the 'stache with a Sharpie and carved out the design with a paring knife and some linocut tools.

We did an assembly line print job, with each of us in charge of one potato. I had to step in periodically to clean off the globs and trim the corners that got soft with ink. The kids liked to roll new ink on the tray and dip and stamp. We stamped onto white paper sacks from Target, and filled them with goodies for kiddie style swag bags. I discoverd Behance --a website/company devoted to enhancing the world of creative peeps--a few months ago and now get regular email updates. I first fell in love with the Action Books, perfect for my way of tracking notes in a meeting. They only offer the paper products with these three Pantone colors:

Today I took the time to check out the latest news, which led me to The 99%.com--what a cool site! I've already watched the 19 min. special on hot shot designer Michael Bierut: 5 Secrets from 86 Notebooks, and there are more on my list. So smart!

Today's article is Don't Be Afraid of the S-Word and it was a sharp little nugget about sales and self-promotion. Perfect for us entrepreneurs. Then I discovered this one, RSS Creativity: Routines, Systems, Spontaneity, by Mark McGuinness. Covering the elements of the creative process, McGuinness breaks it down into the three categories shown here: Routines, Systems, Spontaneity. The author offers us "takeaways" for each category, beginning with ROUTINES.

Starting with the idea that "routine is a key that unlocks creativity," he suggests you "Notice what time(s) of day you are most alert and creative. Dedicate that time to focused creative work. Use the same tools, in the same surroundings, even the same background music, so that they become triggers for your 'creative zone'."

For SYSTEMS, he writes, "A rock-solid productivity system performs a dual function for your creativity: (1) It ensures that all ideas and action steps are captured, so that nothing slips through the cracks, in your own work and within your team, and (2) When you are confident that everything important has been captured, you are free to focus fully on the task in hand."

For SPONTANEITY we begin to understand that our really, hard, nose-to-the-grindstone work should be rewarded with breaks from said routines and hard work--as it is often during these breaks that we are free to experience and generate the much desired "a-ha" moment.

Ever since my trip to Boston I've been releasing my inner preppy. I grew up in the Midwest but had a strong sense of the prep aesthetic...mainly because I grew up in (Lake) Minnetonka where all things Muffy and Buffy were worshiped. I had monogram sweaters, Sperry Top-Siders (in both navy and brown), "duck" shoes from L.L.Bean, a "powder jacket", and pink and green Izod t-shirts that I proudly wore with the collar UP. This, and I made braided barettes for a little side income. I experimented in junior high (it was ugly...) and went back to my tried and trues in high school. Only then it was J.Crew and Ralph Lauren, and my uniform consisted of a men's oxford in plaid or chamois, and blue jeans.

My style has thankfully evolved past the full Muffy stage. I'm loving my West Coast punch bright colors and Palm Springs happy tunics with a little NorCal bohemian mixed in. Still though, to this day, I cannot walk by a sailor striped T without stopping. I still wear my Mikimoto pearl studs most days of the week, and I really love a good monogram. Admittedly, I nearly bought myself a new pair of boat shoes on the recent east coast trip. They'd look so cute with my dark blue skinny jeans and...almost. I may settle for the super chic and utilitarian bucket bag from the Lands' End Canvas collection--a special treat, in honor of my new job.

Getting Ready for Screenprinting at StudioWorks

I can't believe it's been a year since I was last at my first screenprinting workshop at Visual Asylum. I'm back at it again this Friday night for an open studio. Amy said I could use the 4-color press (AWESOME!) and so I busted out my newest design--inspired by the one and only Tim Gunn. I'm obsessed with school craft supplies and I've sketched the Elmer's glue bottle more than once. Practical, chic, fresh, timeless.

After clearing off my whiteboard and having some fabulous women tour my humble little studio I was reminded of the WPA initiative inspired prints commissioned by ReadyMade. My favorite of this group was by artist Chris Silas Neal, "Eat Local, Buy Local, Grow Local" which you can download and print via ReadyMade. I love the colors, the layers, his beautiful typography. More! More! More!

This topic coincides with my current affection for Michael Pollan-- The Ominvore's Dilemma, In Defense of Food, and his newest publication Food Rules...he writes here on the Huffington Post about eating with common sense. I love the magic of Christmas, no question. But what do I love even more? Valentine's Day! When I was on the school paper in junior high, one of the first articles assigned to me was the history of this heartfelt holiday. There are highly debated and dramatic stories about this holyday's origin which include Christian martyrs, Greco-Roman fertility rites, and the Pagan celebration of Lupercalia. Somewhere around the time of Chaucer, Valentine's Day became the courtly tradition we have come to know as a Hallmark holiday. Sigh. Let's go back to the early 1900's when lovers sent each other handwritten poems on lace adorned notes. Too much to ask? Let's just go back to the days when we put pen to paper and signed our names with flair. Remember, sending a "heart" via Facebook does not count, and texting is forbidden. Let Cupid's arrow fly....

How much do I love doing dishes?

I am obsessed with my sample of Caldrea's dishwashing liquid that sports the scent "Ginger Pomelo". Of course it's by the same company that created my favorite Mrs. Meyers Clean Day products.
Although I thought that Mrs. Meyers was already a bit of a "designer" cleaning product that only sometimes will I splurge on, Caldrea is the high end line. Seriously? Yes. And I'm hooked. Not only do these companies have beautifully designed labels, they have sweet smelling scents. Ginger Pomelo is grapefruit, Asian ginger and and sweet basil. I want to wear this smell. It makes me so happy!

Former blue chip marketing exec Monica Nassif pays homage to her mom, Thelma Meyer in this fabulous midwest success story. Celebrating the season, Mrs. Meyers is offering an Iowa Pine Holiday Hand Care and Candle Set. You betcha! A female owned business with ties to Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin, this entrepreneurial endeavor is a great inspiration.

Printmaking with Kids

While I am not inclined to take on such projects everyday, today was a holiday for us all as the boys were out of school and I was playing hooky. I absolutely love all things related to printmaking and had been waiting to dig into this EyeCanArt kit given to the boys on their 5th birthday. Yes, I waited until age 6, but it was worth it.

The monster designs were independently crafted by each of the boys, with some assistance on the cutting and overall strategy. We rocked this out in two stages (design-cut and glue, then print), and based on some of my project edits, we executed it a little bit different than the kit recommends. Mainly, this is due to the fact that I misplaced the proper papers included in the kit. {I stored them flat between books, and am baffled as to where they are.} It still worked with a tweak or two and was marvy for an inaugural attempt. {The main issue is that I used very thick tag board to build the design on, and more thick pieces for the design-including the soft foam sheets}.

I dug up some of the tools I had on hand for linocuts, including some super old orange speedball ink and a large brayer. This helped because we kept one brayer mainly for the ink, the other to burnish the image. I loved using the kraft paper for the boys images, as they were somewhat tribal in design and it made a nice contrast. Mine are ancient, from PaperSource, though I couldn't find them on their website just now.

Inspired by Kate Spade

I've always admired Kate Spade. At first, it was really from a business sense. How does someone create something SO simple--a black nylon bag--and charge SO much...just for a name? That's savvy. Then, as her business developed, I grew more and more enamored with her design and sense of style. We share an aesthetic for color and whimsy, modern mixed with vintage. I launched Truly Fine nearly two years ago and later found her line of paper goods. I love her sense of humor and think the partnership she established with Cranes a smart move.

After creating mini "hosting" and "guesting" guides for the holidays I discovered her little book trilogy--Occasions, Manners, & Style. Lovely illustrations and well written. One of those moments where I actually wanted to BE Kate Spade. Finally, she has a fun part of her website called "Behind the Curtain" and the design of it is SO chic! I love the layout, the color, everything. It's a poor screenshot, I admit, but wanted to include just the same...

She is a creative modern woman whom I admire still--an entrepreneur and style icon who continues to inspire me in all that I do.

Forget Before, Here's the After: Breakfast Nook

I guess I was on holiday most of August. Miss me? After popular demand (from my mom) I decided to share the images of my mini remodel. Unfortunately, I must have archived my photos of the kitchen as it was when we bought it. Grrr. It's so nice to have Before and Afters. I've held off long enough though and am sharing now. The paint is Decorator White, Premium by Behr and the table is from IKEA. This will have to do until I inherit a small fortune and can afford a real Saarinen. Sigh.

Our kitchen still sports a rockin' 80's tract home decor--complete with oak cabinets and (now) crumbling brown grout and oatmeal colored tile--but this little upgrade will inspire the rest of the re-do at a later date. In the meantime, I'm pleased as punch. I love this happy place and the boys eat breakfast there everyday while I make their lunches. Yay!

Special thanks to my dad for spending many a weekend building this out....

Not Damien Hirst

I came across the most awesome blog yesterday...it's essentially a riff on the famed contemporary artist Damien Hirst. Hirst, known for pushing limits on the age-old question "what is art" is portrayed here in the most fabulous tongue in cheek way.

All "works" are titled with a (faux?) Hirst quote. This one was particularly rich...

"The fear of becoming fat expressed in the joy of being colorful"

"49 peanut M&M's of green, orange, blue, brown, yellow and red color which are sold in a mostly yellow bag on which it also writes that "To avoid suffocation, keep bags away from babies, young children and pets." that I bought at a gas station on my way to the train station where my mother was waiting for me on a white plastic windowsill" on a photograph.

I'm intrigued and sickened by Damien Hirst, and that is why this fake Damien Hirst blog is so amusing to me. Cheers, and yes -- "you got to love art!"

Death to the Pen!

Oh D'Nealian, my first cursive love.

I recently read an article in Time Magazine, Mourning the Death of Handwriting, by Claire Suddath. It was a bit disheartening, because I did not get the impression that she was truly mourning the death of handwriting...more like, pondering the death of handwriting. The Gen Y author admits to being a sloppy scriber. Passively accepting that we've traded "artistry for efficiency," Suddath shrugs her shoulders...like, whatever. Gen Why?

Yes, Cursif IS pretty. And so are the other fonts here on Noble Rabbit.

She chronicles the changes our society has made in the past 100+ years, delivering us to a moment in time where script is deemed "pretty & cosmetic." But isn't it okay to be pretty? Isn't that what we value intrinsically? Here, it seems a more fitting a description of a Bonne Belle lip gloss. I'd like to see the letters transcend "pretty", become beautiful in their original glory with the curves and swoops that inspire words themselves to hold weight and carry meaning. With proper penmanship even a simple grocery list becomes a heartfelt momento. XOXO scratched in red is tiny love note. Even the words that come out a bit wonky (is that an e or an l?) exude a bit of mystery and spontaneity.

A handwritten note--with a scratch or scribble where you made your mistake--means so much more than a cryptic text or a casual email. Besides, isn't it good exercise for your digits? I challenge you this week to hand write a note, make a list, craft a memo. To anyone...your bestie, your mum, your hon or your sib. To you! Use the whole page. Use ink.

Keeping it Real

I knew that starting my own business was not going to be easy. I just thought it would be easier to stay fired up about it! But being a perfectionist can really screw you up...for one, I refused to draft a news release about Truly Fine because I thought that I needed to accomplish key milestones before I was viewed as legitimate. And I couldn't sent a release having accomplished nothing! What a silly idea. Launching a business is, in itself, an accomplishment. I can't expect having my product in stores, without making people aware of the product to begin with. So counterintuitive! Second, as great as my marketing skills are, I fell into the age-old trap of undervaluing myself and my product, making it a real challenge to feel confident in "selling" the brand. Finally, I experienced rotten business karma when my flagship retailer, Gizmo Garage, closed shop at the New Children's Museum and ran off without payment or goods return. Grrrr.

I recently received a great shot in the arm from a new found friend, starting her own matchmaking business (more to come on this one!). She loves my designs and offered to help represent the lines. We've decided to trade---I'm designing her logo and she's pimping my goods. To get a feel for where I'm at, she asked me pointed questions that made me really acknowldege my strengths, weaknesses and big picture goals. A simple exercise, but wholly worthwhile.

I'm working hard to overcome the challenges that exist naturally and the ones I've created for myself, to enhance and utilize my strengths, to turn my dreams into reality. Wish me luck...

Renegade Craft Fair

I'm not sure how I stumbled upon Good Bones Great Pieces, but I'm continually drawn to the work of former Martha Stewart staff. In this case it's a mother-daughter design team blogging and etsying their way through decor and fashion. One of their most recent posts features Irena Sophia, a New York based illustrator they discovered at the Renegade Craft Fair in Salem, New York.

Luckily Renegade Craft Fairs are happening all over the place. The nearest location for me is Los Angeles, and is coming up soon...July 11-12. Don't you love the illustration? Renegade Handmade, based in the uber-cool Wicker Park area of Chicago, is an extension of the fair phenomenon.

I love this kind of discovery...in reading the May 2009 issue of Oprah (not How or Readymade or Print), OPRAH, I learned of an ink-saving font, ecofont. When printed in a point size 12 or less, this brilliant design saves 20% in ink. Of course a Dutch company called SPRANQ came up with the tiny circles which are naked to the eye and easy on your pricey cartridges. I'm down with this, and will even use it at work on the multitude of internal docs I print daily. On spranq's website you can find the link to download the font for FREE, and also play a game called "moneymaker." This game intrigued me, but without a key to the Dutch language I was lost.

Flea Market Finds

One of my favorite activities in the world is thrifting. Mainly resale shops like AmVets or Salvation Army, because I am not organized or flexible with my time enough to do garage sales. But I love the thrill of hunting for and finding special treasures. I've found still life paintings, funky ceramics, mercury glass, kid's clothes, linens, notions, dishes, clocks, you name it. I love finding quality ribbon and bias tape for a steal. I've also taken to finding dorky old coffee mugs like Camp Tookalusa 1971 or a subverted FedEx logo reading "FedUp".

I always keep my eyes open for old office supplies. That's why I was so jazzed to find some airmail envelopes on last weekend's hunt. I also found this fabulous antique map chalkboard. LOVE it! Just finding the right spot for it now...There are a few friends I have had that love this, just like me. Right now, none of my pals would tolerate the dirt and grunge and weirdness of the process. My mom and my sister get it, but they are miles away. What do YOU hunt for?

A Beautiful Eye

I discovered Bell'occhio (Italian for "beautiful eye") this week, a charming store in San Francisco which carries some of the most beautiful gifts and goods. Of course, I discovered the online version, which I'm sure is not nearly as magical as the actual shop. Sigh. It doesn't matter because I was wooed by numerous items in their Maison and Papeterie sections.

Finally I found the uber chic black chalkboard oilcloth that I first saw in Domino {RIP}. I can't wait to order this and put in on my dining room table.

I Heart You: The Art of the Screenprint

This is a little chronicle of my first attempt at silk screening. Last month I attended a workshop at Visual Asylum to create a two-color fine art print. I submitted my design in advance ("I Heart You" won over "Be Kind" on my Facebook Challenge) and the kind peeps at VA burned my screens in advance. I chose a bright, true red and a soft, dreamy blue. There was only one other student in the workshop--he chose brown and the same dreamy blue. His design went swimmingly with mine-"We all have a song" with a bird and a branch.

My very first print was PERFECT, then the blue ink got a little sticky...and, oh well, I created about 20 prints and they are full of charming little (and big flaws). It was SO great. I really loved it and can't wait to try it again. Near the end, we started to merge some of our designs and created some real gems.

Again, I find myself wondering...Where Have I Been? and How Have I Missed This? Three Potato Four is an online shop and blog that features fabulous flea market finds and original art. Noted by Cookie, Oprah, Domino and Daily Candy, Three Potato Four is a mecca of vintage goodness. I'm smitten with the letterpress goodies, the graphic tins and tea towels, and even the old light bulb collection.

Sneak Preview: Looks for the Nook

I'm working on my kitchen breakfast nook (okay, my dad is), and am now ready to get quotes on custom bench cushions and hopefully a re-do on two Louis XVI chairs to go with it. I am channeling a little bit of Miami with green, orange and pink guiding my way. My other kitchen post features a lot of bright white. This palette will give it a fresh pop that will carry through, and connect with other accents in my house.
While I dream of owning an Eero Saarinen table, my budget only allows for an IKEA Docksta table. Sigh. For now, this is a fabulous alternative.

I can't wait to get the cushions and table ordered and move the project along. I'm envisioning a sunny Sunday morning with a hot cup of strong coffee, my favorite design mags, and Greek yogurt with farm fresh strawberries, honey and walnuts. Mmmmmm...

Office Supply Stationery

I've mentioned before how much I love office supplies. The projects outlined in a Martha Stewart craft section also remind me of some found object/repurposed stationery by Stephanie from Phantom Limb and also ReduxPaper on Etsy. These are great projects for kids and are fun to personalize with souvenirs from trips (maps, menus, etc.). I'm also especially fond of this Measuring Tape Tape from the Museum of Useful Things. So fun on packages, lunch bags, notecards, book marks. I cut a strip for my work surface so that I can measure things in an instant. Finally, manila packaging tags are infinitely useful. Stock up at ULINE.

Tweetjacking the Mompreneur

Tweetjacking? I discovered this word on the front page of Alltop.com, which I read about in Entrepreneur (the actual magazine) which led me to a blog about this book called "The Anatomy of Buzz Revisited" but I still don't totally get it. I don't even know how to Tweet, let alone jack someone's Twitter. This is is likely a huge opportunity, but right now, it's a problem for me and (perhaps) for other mompreneurs as well...How do we keep up with social media?

My website is a necessity, but it's certainly not driving sales and because I refuse to invest in a professional web designer, it's not that dynamic. Enough about websites though, the money shot is in social media, like blogs, Facebook and Twitter. These networking vehicles are quite demanding--not just to keep "up to date" but to be ahead of the curve! bursting with information!! comments, links, photos, references, whatever! (notice my sense of urgency with exclamation points). It's also a bit of a popularity contest, what with fans, friends and followers...What's a girl to do?

Threadless Prints

It's official, I'm obsessed with printmaking. I'm psyched to have learned the process at StudioWorks via Visual Asylum, and now I've discovered that the super rad T-Shirt gig Threadless ventured into printland as well. So cool. Examples, above. I'll post soon on the first design shown here "Magical Powers", by Ray Fenwick. Finally, the kid's shirts are completely unique, Beck and Max have been gifted a lovely collection, and have since grown out of all of them. Pinball Publishing

Through the ever talented Kate Bingaman-Burt of Obsessive Consumption I found Pinball Publishing in Portland, Oregon. I have no need for a current print run, and like to do work locally, but they are so flippin' cool it might be worth the long distance to work with them on a future project. They recntly published a series of designer postcards which help promote their own mad printing skills. This one is by artist Lisa DeJohn. I'm obsessed with the rounded corners and it appears that Pinball is more than equipped to execute such details.

From Pinball: Lisa DeJohn is a fine artist, illustrator and surface designer living in the North Shore of Massachusetts. She draws inspiration from plant forms, animals, architectural structures and antique paper goods. Her freelance work includes clients such as Chronicle Books, The Land of Nod, teNeues Publishing, IKEA, Godiva Chocolatier and Urban Outfitters.

Design*Sponge rocks. I just discovered two totally cool concepts that I can actually implement without major $$$ outlay, tools or time.

#1. I'm going to use the myriad jars I've been hoarding to set up a little glass photo ensemble. Many thanks to Design*Sponge for this cool post.

#2. A perfect fit with my need for entryway overhauling and foyer fluff up. This little felt cutie is just right for the last minute miscellanea that always seems to be sitting on the floor in front of the door. Love the wallpaper...

Inspired Entryway

My entryway needs a major overhaul. These pictures (via Domino r.i.p., and Martha Stewart Living) are a little jump start to my process. The thing is, I have an entryway and a FOYER. No complaints, it just means that I have room for beauty AND function AND two rowdy 5-year olds.

I'm way into the wire baskets, and would love to be ambitious enough to take on wall paper. Otherwise, I admire the eclectic and homey nature of these vignettes, the bold use of color, and the personal art/artifacts in the heart of an organized hub.

I may be a member of the "Save the Polaroids" group on FaceBook, but I'm pretty sure it is not coming back. Sigh. That's why I'm SO TOTALLY THRILLED that I found Poladroid, a free application that turns your images into Polaroid looking lovelies. I may be behind the curve on this one, but I'm loving every minute of the drag, drop and virtual slow develop process which comes complete with sound effects.

The Book of Love

Over time I've become more fascinated with the fine art of silkscreening. For one, there is a graphic quality to the final product that thrills my heart. Two, I love the idea of creating works of art en masse (albeit by hand), making the final product available to a larger audience at an affordable price point. And finally three: paper, ink, color. It's as close to traditional print journalism as a word loving artist can get.

This love was intensified when I received an email from Visual Asylum's "Studio Works" introducing upcoming Silkscreen Workshops. I hope to attend the Fine Art Prints Workshop next Saturday. Next step...work up a two color design. Happy V-Day.

I'm in a SLOW process of updating our awesome 80s tract home kitchen. Starting with the creation of a breakfast nook. There is an awkward open space just calling for a cozy corner, and my dad and husband are graciously taking this project on. It's just the tip of the iceberg, though as I can't stand the dated and flaking tile countertops and wood cabinets. The kitchen is the darkest room in the house and has the lowest ceilings. It needs a light injection. I discovered a host of kitchen shots that feature bright white floors, which would solve the dark issue. Uugh. My floors are wood, but a bit over done. A little on the orange side I would say...Do I counteract that with white cabinets or go bold and paint everything dark? Oh, and I HAVE to have that red Brady lovin' phone.

Hurrah! Short of some new accessories (that I hope to scrounge up from my own thrift collection) and some art, this little loo is complete. I did end up getting a Marimekko curtain, fresh off the truck from Crate & Barrel. It has a funky wood block inspired print in a really golden yellow hue. What a Happy Finnish Design! The towel hooks are from Cost Plus, a nice folk art woodsy piece made in India. The towels are cushy Egyptian cotton in a natural unbleached color, a steal of a set from Marshalls. I just cannot spend big bucks on things I know I can find cheap. High-Low. A lovely combo...

I feel like I've been missing out. 20x200 is a website/project by Jen Bekman. From a gallery in New York representing emerging artists she came up with a bigger vision: (limited editions x low prices) + the internet = art for everyone

How cool is that? I love the concept and am especially thrilled with her selection of works. She is an inspiration.

This piece, ny.08.#14, by Jennifer Sanchez makes me feel like the artist zipped into my heart with a canvas, and came out painting. It would be so fabulous in my home. There are actually some left in the medium (14x11) and large size (22x17) and I don't think $50 and $200 is too much. Although, I wonder how much the original is...hee hee.

This is our main bath, the loo, on 80's track home fever. On New Year's Day I finally had it with the cheap towel rack, old woodwork, and dirty off white paint job.

I went to the garage and discovered some amazing unopened Behr exterior semi-gloss in Bitter Chocolate. Excellent choice! Why do I have this? Hmmm. The other color I had waiting in the wings was a beautiful bubble yum pink, originally intended for my office. Ummm. No. Best wait on this one. So I trucked on over to Home Depot and found Creek Bend.
Nice....the bathroom is looking so ritzy now! To complete the look I must incorporate an element of whimsy and grapic fun. I found this fabulous Marimekko shower curtain at Crate & Barrel, towels at Target (in "sunshine"), and I'm still debating on the towel hooks--while I appreciate the homage to the Amish, the birds might be nice if I spray painted them dark brown...

I came across a new documentary, Who Does She Think She Is?, a film by Pamela Tanner Boll about the tension between motherhood and creativity, about women who do not choose between working and mothering. Through the lives of five women artists she explores a host of dichotomies--traditional and modern. It's still in a screening phase, but I'm keeping my eyes open for a San Diego debut. The work pictured above is by one of the artists featured.

In my quest for a red Keep Calm and Carry On original screen print I found the most excellent website, ReForm School. I heart their aesthetic and found these very original cards made by Polite Cards with Bob and Roberta Smith. ReForm School has the most fabulous "categories" such as Home Ec, Child Development, Locker Room, and my favorite-- Student of the Month which features an artist. LOVE the opportunities here for original, affordable art. Quirky, fresh, and lovely. Very Wes Anderson. They have a brick and mortar shop in LA, and I'll be sure to visit the next time I head north.

I'm pleased to share a coffee table book I received for Christmas...30,000 years of art...which is quite beautiful. I find myself drawn to the usual suspects like Rothko, Klee, Matisse, as well as ancient, primitive works. So modern! It's especially nice to see one of my favorite works from SDMA, by Juan Sanchez Cotan, it's called Still-life with Quince, Cabbage, Melon and Cucumber. I'm particularly drawn to a good still life and THIS is perfection.

She's Crafty

I just returned from snow town--Minneapolis--where I spent a glorious 2.5 days in the company of friends, family, art and good food. I had the distinct pleasure of showing my Truly Fine wares at The Gale Mansion with other artists whose work I've grown up admiring. I also spent some quality BFF time shopping at Patina and Paper Source, and dining at Lucia's. The surprise hit of my weekend followed the Gale show, at the VFW in Uptown. "The Handmaiden's Present: Craftsmas" featured rockin' indie crafters with quirky humor and perky presentations. I'm so thrilled to have met Detroit's Queen Craftin' Bee, Stephanie of Phantom Limb and the Handmade Detroit collective. She introduced me to another cool chick, Angela, a co-founder of I Like You, a Minneapolis brick & morter featuring local artists. Our weekend culminated with great conversation and burgers at Bryant Lake Bowl, an MSP institution.

I try to keep this "professional" and interesting devoid of tabloid style commentary. We'll see. Today i'm writing about my favorite color, BLUE. i love blue as a word too. I used to have a T-shirt that had BLUE written in all different languages. Beautiful as kek, bleu, or azzuro. I really am into the Morrocan rich blue that is featured in the recent issue of Elle Decor. Fabrics, pottery and tile. The gardens of Yves Saint Laurent's compound in Marakesh are so gorgeous and SO rich in color. I love it. I told Jarrod we should go there. We'll see.

My best gal pals and I have been watching Nate's rise to fame via Oprah because we went to Hopkins High School in Minnetonka, MN with Mr. Berkus. We even shared home room, back when he rocked a pink polo shirt, collar up, layered with another preppy find. Cute then, cute now. Congratulations Nate!

After a lovely trek to Boulder I'm back to the summer grind in sunny San Diego. Going to work after fun, family AND whitewater rafting is so so hard! I confess, i fell in love with the Denver Art museum, and did not once experience vertigo in their funked up space. Damien Hirst's ginormous ash tray, entitled Party Time, was a major highlight. It's large and filthy, but for some reason i loved it. I also was drawn to works on paper in a small exhibition assembled by printmaker Melanie Yazzie, Associate Professor of Art at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Really wonderful works, that i wish i could begin to acquire. Finally--new designer favorite: Johnny Was. Gorgeous material and colors. SOO cheery & fresh.

Back from Sabbatical

Dear Diary, I'm taking this quiet moment sans children, husband still in bed, to get back on blog track. It's so easy to let the daily grind take over my creative space-physically and mentally. I finally cleared a path in my office, and made room on my desk for a laptop. Forget that though...I'm drinking hot java, looking through a window with a view--hummingbirds, bunnies and a roadrunner are my friends today. Amy Winehouse and Rilo Kiley also keep me company. I love RK's "Under the Blacklight" album which i recently downloaded. a bit of country, pop and indie. Just right. Latest accomplishments: #1. I mastered the Mojito--pitcher style. While I pretty much cashed out my supply of fresh mint (found growing on the side of the house, SCORE!), I think it was well worth it. #2. Jarrod deconstructed our 80's style patio "gazebo" so that i will be able to turn into a chic cabana. Curtains arrive tomorrow. I'm getting garden inspired for our backyard redux, and I'm also scheming a facelift for the main bath. Marimekko shower curtain? Needs to be bold. COLOR. Yellow. So solstice-y....Cheers!

This weekend marks the retail debut of Truly Fine Design, at Gizmo Garage in San Diego's New Children's Museum (NCM). At the ultra-green, uber-cool new facility kids and parents will be treated to hand's on experiences and contemporary art. I'll be on hand throughout opening activities (this weekend) to meet and greet the masses and aptly promote my designs. As Founding Members of NCM, and hearty advocates of TFD, my very supportive family will be on hand for a visit this afternoon. Tomorrow's FREE Block Party will be unbelievable. Three cheers to my gal pals at NCM who put this all together!

My Favorite Things: In the Office

I've decided it would be fun to write about some of my favorite things--the themes i can cover are endless, and maybe it will help me keep on blog task! So to begin...I'm admittedly TYPE A when i comes to my supplies at work (home & museum). I might even compare myself to Milton and his red stapler in cult classic Office Space. {Note to all: PLEASE see this film. I guarantee, you are not sporting enough flair.} I've gone so far as to label my No. 8 Orange Fiskars, as well as my stapler and my wooden 18" ruler. The Fiskars must not be replaced by a cheap imitation. It simply won't do. I've added to my home office the Fiskars Titanium Nitride 9.5 In. Shop Shears which hang gleefully on my pegboard next to double-sided Scotch tape (i heart 3M) and an ancient pair of pinking shears. Speaking of labeling. My office would not be complete without the Brother P-touch 1750. I believe the latest version of this model is 1950. When a labeler is not necessary, Mr. Sharpie comes to the rescue. I'm especially fond of the retractable fine points for general usage, and the extra fine points for writing notes. Sharpie ALSO now offers highlighters (amazing) and you can personalize your pens with name, monogram, message or pirate clip art. Ahoy matey!

Truly Inspired

I realize it's been a bit since my last post. Not long ago I had the great pleasure of attending a "color seminar' with an international color guru. As many of you know, i am quite color obsessed. Therefore, this was an outstanding way to spend a Saturday. I am continually inspired by color, and this is evident to me every time i look at my inspiration board (shown above). I created this just less than a year ago to stir my creative spirits. Color and language make my heart spin. What makes you spin?

Pure Poetry

I'm writing in this heartfelt holy week to spread my passion for poetry. To begin, I think that sharing poetry or words from the heart are the most lovely, personal gifts you could ever give. If you are unable to express yourself, or are simply unsatisfied with your own sentiment, it can be just as meaningful (if not more so) to write out a favorite poem or haiku.

A number of recent personal and professional projects have revived my love for Rabindranath Tagore. My dear friend Andy from ages past gave me a book called Fireflies. it is chock full of beautiful little poem meditations and floral illustrations. At the beginning of January, I revisited the text and selected this to share with friends and family:

I discovered today (after re-reading the dedication from Andy), that this was also his favorite poem at the time. In addition to Tagore, I'm quite fond of emily dickinson and e.e. cummings. In fact, I'm still in love with this one {for you JS} :

Office Envy

I have to jot off a quick note because I feel I've been remiss in not sharing yet two of my favorite websites. First, let me confess my true passion for office supplies. Some of my finest childhood memories include going to the local office supply shop with my dad. I believe it was called "Nelson's". I sampled every pen and pencil, ogled the Crane's stationery, and created countless reasons for why I simply must have the "Thank You Very Much" order pad for my weekend restaurant. I was eight. Clearly, there are others like me.

Not only do I love Office PDX, I actually wish I had been so cool as to come up with the concept A retail store, event space and gallery--all in a 1950's office environment. Love their design, love the stationery and supplies they carry, and love that they are a gallery (online too). Bonus: You can buy original art from them. One of my other fave office sites is Russell+Hazel. They have lovely paper products and accessories. I lucked out and got the new Audrey Expanding Five-file Tote for Christmas. Patent Black. On a Birthday Bender

Dear Lucy, I just wrapped up three days of birthday festivities—with my near and dears fêting me with some of my favorite things. I highly recommend stretching this out. It started off with a small bunch of pink ranunculus flowers for my office, and my latest addiction, Gingerberry Kombucha. On Friday the girls took me to lunch at Bloomies. Honestly, we ate the most delicious plain frozen yogurt topped ever so subtly with walnuts and honey. Note to self: simple yet glam dessert for company. On our way out we met up with an unavoidable cashmere clearance. SCORE! Then off to Sephora where we tried nearly every long last mascara and lip pumping gloss available. This season’s must haves: Too-Faced Lash Injection (Pitch Black AND Bright Blue), Amazing Cosmetics Amazing Concealer, and Vincent Longo Lipstain Lipstick SPF 15 in Chica Mokita. I took the last one and barely escaped a small riot. We landed our sorry-ass tired feet (I wore some beautiful, painful boots on our outing) at Anastasia’s brow bar in Nordstrom’s. Aaaah… the joy of putting my feet up far outweighed the pain caused by hot wax and detailed tweezing. Gorgeous and rested, we ventured into the Cheesecake Factory like tourists in Tulsah. {Where are we? And why the hell is it so busy?} After a tall El Diablo we called it a night. Salut! Saturday followed with a fan-club-like stalking of Tiger Woods at the Buick Invitational, a pedicure with my gal pal (Lincoln Park After Dark, baby!) and the best pizza this side of NY, the Pizza Monterey at Pizza Port in Solana Beach. Artichoke hearts, onion, pepperoni and mushroom. Yes, we are at the pearly gates. Finally, a family brunch on Sunday with fresh squeezed OJ mimosas, spinach and goat cheese quiche, berries and oranges, bagels and lox. Did I mention? I’m a foodie. Bonus: I didn’t have to do the dishes! Savor the moment...Yours truly, S

Dear Lucy,

That's your official name now, because Diary is simply a bit drab and really not personal at all. At times, I may even refer to you affectionately as Lulu. Greetings! I've officially made it 50 days into the launch of Truly Fine Design. To begin, why blog? It has come to my attention, in the crash course of marketing and managing a small business in the new millennium, that creating a BLOG is as important as creating a website. My greatest fear in starting this little monster is for it to seem cliché, ego-maniacal, or worse, boring. I'm going to treat this media as a window into my Truly Fine World of entrepreneurship, motherhood, art & design, stationery (of course!), fashion, culture, communication, and literature. That's just a start...in essence, whatever rings my bell. Hopefully it chimes for you as well. If not, at least I have a record of the journey, Subscriber:1.
